Under 11’s Football Tournament – Caedrawnant 25th April 2009

Congratulations and a big thank you to all Under 11 players who helped the club WIN the tournament at Caedrawnant on Saturday 25th April.

The team went unbeaten all day without conceding a single goal. In the group stages in the first game, Cwm beat Valley Blades 2-0 then drew 0-0 with Cwmbach before beating Grasshoppers ‘B’ 2-0.

These results were enough to win the group and progress into the final group which included Abercwmboi, Carnetown & Llwydcoed. In the first game Cwm drew 0-0 with Abercwmboi then beat Carnetown 1-0 in they’re second game. The results left Cwmaman going into their final game against Llwydcoed needing a win and Llwydcoed only needing a draw.

Cwm started strongly and continued to have the lions share of possession and went on to win the game 2-0 and deservedly win the tournament in style.

Once again a big thank you to all the players listed below who were part of the team in their last season at under 11’s.

The Squad - Owyn Flook, Callum McGrath, Lewis Nott, Joshua Jones, Ellis Panniers, Ben Panniers, Ellie Lake, Kojo, Dannie Nash, McCauley Cole, Callum Jenkins, Liam Jones, Josh Boggis, Jessie James, Saskia Wickham, Kieran Samuels.

On a final note, good luck to Saskia Wickham for the future who has been an excellent servant to Cwmaman junior football but unfortunately now has to play for a girls team at Under 12’s level and upwards. Good Luck and thanks for all the goals!!

Merthyr Saints 0 Cwmaman Institute 3

12th May 2009 Tue (Welsh League)

Cwmaman made the short journey to Merthyr for this mid week game, knowing that victory would almost certainly secure their Welsh League status.

Once again it was Player Manager Leighton Price who put Cwmaman on the road to the all important win. A free kick some 20 yards from goal found the back of the net with the goal keeper stranded. Playing conditions were difficult with the high wind and hard playing surface. The ball seemed to be in the air more than on the ground.

Cwmaman were in control for most of the open period, with chances created but not taken, a move down the right did result in David Airey converting a cross by Michael Oliver with a powerful header.

The home team were on the back foot for most of the half, but the centre forward did have chance but his header went over the cross bar.

Merthyr seemed to up their game after the interval and put Cwmaman under a bit of pressure, their game became untidy and passes were going astray. Cwmaman weathered the storm and normal service was resumed when Robert Evans hit a snap shoot to score from 20 yards.

This was the end of the game as a spectacle and Cwmaman played the game out to secure the three points.

Cwmaman last two games are away to Troedyrhiw and Briton Ferry.

Cwmaman Institute 4 Monmouth Town 3

9th May 2009 (Welsh League)

What a cracking game of football, Seven goals and flowing football kept the supporters happy, the victory also went a long way to keeping Cwmaman in the Welsh League next season.

Player Manager Leighton Price opened the scoring on 5 mins with a trade mark free kick, the away team were playing some very good pass and move football, one move resulted in them being awarded a penalty kick to level matters. Back came Cwmaman and Matthew Cable restored the home teams advantage with a powerful header from a corner. Chances were coming thick and fast for both sides, it was no surprise when Monmouth equalised following a cross to the far post.

The interval came with no further scoring. The second half was more of the same, Price completed his hat trick  with two further goals, the first put Cwmaman back into the lead again with a goal from close range, the forth goal was a flowing move involving several players and finished off by Price. Monmouth were not finished and scored near the end to set up a grand stand finish with Cwmaman defending to hang onto the points.

This win went a long way in the quest to keep Cwmaman in the Welsh League, Three points in their next game at Merthyr Saints should secure their status.

Seven Sisters 0 Cwmaman Institute 0

7th May 2009 (Welsh League)

Cwmaman travelled to the Neath valley for this midweek game against a team they had beaten one nil early in the season. Playing up the slope in the first half, Cwmaman were comfortable in defence and restricted the home team to very few chances, what came his way young Kurt Rogers handled things well and his kicking was very good.

Cwmaman were quick on the break but poor passing in the midfield area restricted them to few chances. A free kick found Cable, his header found Matthew Davies but his chance was saved by the home keeper.

Cwmaman were in control of the game in the second half, with chances coming thick and fast. Now playing down the slope, they controlled the game in the midfield area. With that came the chances, Robert Evans forced the home keeper into making a brilliant save with a shot from 20 yards, Price shot over when well placed and Airey delayed his shot and the chance was gone

Cwmaman’s problem this season has been scoring goals, this game was no exception, they had several chances to win this game but wasted them all. Howe shot over after bursting through the home defence and Airey had a great chance to win the game in the dying seconds when Evans set him up but once again the chance was lost.

Cwmaman Institute 0 Newport Civil Service 2

25th April 2009 (Welsh League)

The Gwent side completed the double over Cwmaman, but the outcome could have been very different if Cwm had taken their chances in the first 30 minutes.

In the first few minutes Rhys Howe was put through by Leighton Price, but Howe shot straight at the keeper. Price was then played in by David Airey with the same out come, Cwmaman keeper Kurt Rogers made a very good save, then Matthew Davies had the keeper to beat but the chance went begging. At this level these chances must be taken.

The game continued to flow with Cwmaman having the lion’s share of the game, but the half time whistle came with the neither team able to break the deadlock.

The Gwent team were more positive at the start of the second half, causing Cwmaman some problems. With the half only minutes old the Referee had to take the players from the field because of a down pour of hail stones. On their return Newport went in front almost immediately when Rogers was beaten from close range.

Cwmaman were finding it difficult to find their first half form, a second goal came from a defensive error when the ball was given away in midfield, before Cwmaman could recover the ball was in the back of the net. Cwmaman need to put this behind them and continue to show guts and determination in their quest to stay in the Welsh League.

14th April 2009 Tue (Welsh League)

A disappointing result for Cwmaman after the players put so much work into the performance. To lose the game in the 91st min after fighting back from a 4th min penalty was hard to swallow.

Cwm started the game in fighting mood, before the early Pontyclun penalty they had forced the away keeper into making two very good saves, first Daniel Johnson hit the crossbar from 20 yards with the away keeper beaten and Mike Oliver forced  him into a stunning save from fully 30yards. The penalty came from a breakaway by Pontyclun, a long ball caught the Cwm defence square and Martin Phillips was beaten to the ball by the attacker.

The rest of the half was nip and tuck between the two teams with Cwmaman giving Pontyclun a lot of problems.

Cwmaman continued to put the away team under pressure, with Robert Evans prominent. The evergreen Adrian James was busy in midfield and Matthew Cable dominant in defence.

After 70 mins Cwmaman found the goal which brought them back into the game, a move down the right resulted in Robert Evans scoring in the top corner. The home team were now looking for the winning goal, but with some poor finishing, and wrong options taken, it was Pontyclun who took all three points. They broke out of defence with pace, which caught the home defence napping and scored with a defected goal in the 91st min. The over all performance by Cwmaman was good and goes well for the remainder of the season.

Cwmaman Institute 2 Cwmamman United 2

11th April 2009 (Welsh League)

Yet another 2 all draw but a point closer to safety, a game that Cwmaman looked like winning, but in the end were hanging on for that very important point. The visitors from Ammanford are riding high in the top five and looking to consolidate that position, but it was the home team that went in front after 15 mins, they had come close on two occasions before the goal with David Day and Adrian James hitting the side netting. A corner by young Anthony Hatch found Robert Evans at the far post, who volleyed into the bottom corner. At this point Cwmaman were well worth the lead and were giving the visitors problems with pace of Evans and Day.

Cwmamman United drew level on 30 mins against the run of play, when a rare mistake by Matthew Cable, allowed the striker in on goal, Phillips saved the shot only for the rebound to find the top corner.

Back came the home team and David Day restored their one goal advantage, a long ball down the right seemed to be the goalkeepers but Days pace got there first to slide the ball into the net.

Confidence was high at the interval of another victory and 3 points, the second half was only seconds old when the visitors drew level once more, The Cwmamman player was allowed space to score at the near post. The impetus was now with the visitors and they took advantage by putting Cwm under pressure, for long periods Cwm could not get out of their half. When they did Airey had a shot saved and Davies headed over from a corner. On 65 mins Cwmamman United had a player sent off for 2 yellow cards, but they still took the game to the home team and had a goal disallowed in the last minute for offside.

A disappointing second half for Cwm after a promising opening when they could have won the game.

Cwmaman Institute 3 Risca United 0

4th April 2009 (Welsh League)

After the International break Cwmaman got back to winning ways with this convincing win over their visitors from Gwent.

They continued the good run with goals from Mike Oliver, Robert Evans and David Day. It was the visitors who put Cwm under pressure early on with some neat football, keeper Martyn Phillips had to be at his best to thwart the Gwent team’s attacks. Cwmaman started to find space down the flanks, from one attack the Risca keeper miss kicked the football, it fell to Mike Oliver who made no mistake from 35 yards.

This was just the confidence boost that Cwm needed and it was the turn of Risca to feel the pressure.

The remaining of the half was nip and tuck between the two teams with no further scoring.

The second half was only 5 mins old when Robert Evans scored an absolute beauty, a move down the left involving Titch Johnston saw Evans beat 2 defenders inside the box and curl a shot into the far corner of the net. Cwmaman were now in the driving seat, and dealt easily with everything that Risca could throw at them. They even missed a penalty during this period. From a corner young Adrian James saw his header struck the cross bar then saw the rebound cleared off the goal line.

The Third and final goal was scored by sub David Day, he made a run through the middle and beat 2 defenders to score from 15 yards into the bottom corner. His first goal for the first team.

Ystradgynlais 2 Cwmaman Institute 2

21st March 2009 (Welsh League)

Cwmaman continued their good run of results, with this hard earned draw at fellow strugglers Ystradgynlais. On a very poor playing surface, a passing game was impossible, the home team were more robust and knew how to play the surface, up and under was the call of the day.

Playing with a strong wind Cwm were first out of the blocks, with chances being created but only one taken, A long throw in by Rhys Howe put Robert Evans through on goal, he beat the home keeper with shot into the bottom corner. This was no more than Cwm deserved but disaster struck in a 10 min spell, two defensive errors gave the home team a 2-1 lead at the interval.

With the wind at their backs Ystradgynlais played the long ball and put Cwm under pressure, once again Cwmaman were being drawn into a battle. They rode their luck on occasions, but as the game went on the home team became more frustrated. With 15 mins to go Cwm drew level, once again a long ball was the source of the attack, a ball played down the middle was latched onto by David Airey who beat the two defenders and hit the back of the net to gain Cwm a point.

This draw means Cwmaman have only lost one game in the last seven, with their next game at home to Risca Town on 4th April kick off 2:30.

Cwmaman Institute 3 Troedyrhiw 0

14th March 2009 (Welsh League)

One of Cwmaman best home performances of the season, following the previous weeks poor display, this was like a breath of fresh air.

The passing and movement against a team that had beaten Llwydcoed the previous week was a joy to watch. Cwm took the game to the visitors and created several chances with Robert Evans prominent in attack.

Troedyrhiw were pushed back on the defensive and were finding it difficult to contain the home attack.

Rhys Howe scored his first goal of the season, when he latched onto a loose pass and hit a shot from 30yards which flew into the net. Cwmaman continued to press and were rewarded with their second goal on 35 mins, a cross from the right evaded the away defence for young Daniel Johnson to score at the far post.

With their tails up, the confidence was going right through the team, the defence was solid with Cable and young Woodford outstanding. With Cwmaman attacking at every opportunity the Third goal soon followed, Daniel Johnson started and finished the move with a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

A very good day at the office, which will gave everyone confidence going into the final games of the season.

Cwmaman next home game is on April 3rd against Risca United kicking off 2:30pm.

Cwmaman Institute 2 Merthyr Saints 2

7th March 2009 (Welsh League)

After the superb performance against Llantwit Fardre the week before, this was very disappointing against a team bottom of the league. It must be said the Referee did not help matters with his over enthusiastic attitude.

No one had any idea what lay ahead when in the 15th minute, Merthyr had their number 8 sent off and their manager also dismissed. At this stage of the game Cwmaman were playing some nice football and Michael Oliver put them in front on 30 mins. But instead of pushing on and completing the victory required, the home team got themselves involved in a game they could not control. Before the end of the half Matthew ‘legs’ Davies was dismissed for two yellow cards.

Cwmaman should have had more to show for their efforts by the interval, but indiscipline let them down.

Merthyr attacked the home team from the start of the second half, and were rewarded with the equaliser on the hour mark. Cwmaman were getting put under pressure and Martyn Phillips was performing miracles in the Cwmaman goal. Cwm were awarded a free kick and in trying to retrieve the ball,  young Anthony Hatch was dismissed for reasons only known to the referee. It was now an up hill battle to hang on to a point, but worse was to follow, Merthyr scored a second with 15 mins remaining, at this stage Cwmaman looked down and out. With time running out Robert Evans scored with a shot from 20yards into the bottom corner to gain a point for the home team. Cwmaman need to improve on this performance if they are to retain their Welsh League status. They must also improve their discipline if they are to survive.

Llantwit Fardre 1 Cwmaman Institute 1

28th February 2009 (Welsh League)

A very good result for the young Cwmaman team, against a top three side in Llantwit Fardre.  Cwmaman dominated the opening exchanges and created several good chances, Airey was put through by Price only to see his lob going narrowly wide of the upright. From a corner Cable had a free header but could not hit the target, Young Daniel Johnson was also off target with a close range effort. The Away team were outclassing the promotion chasing home team, with Price and James dominating in the midfield area.

From a rare attack Fardre went in front, a move down the left gave the winger space and he went through several weak tackles to beat the advancing Phillips. Back came Cwmaman and Airey was put through once again but the home keeper smothered the effort.

Cwmaman were awarded a free kick some 30 yards from goal, Price found Cable at the far post, and he gave the home keeper no chance with a powerful header.

The second half saw Fardre attack Cwmaman from the kick off, but the Cwm defence stood firm. Phillips in goal and Cable at centre half were outstanding.

This was one of the best performances of the season, and the last few games have seen a big improvement, but on the down side, injuries to Leighton Price hamstring, Richard Williams’s ankle, and Scott Carson knee will test the squad over the next few weeks.

Cwmaman Institute 2 Llansawel 2

31st January 2009 (Welsh League)

A wonderful comeback by the home team, at 2 nil down Cwmaman looked dead and buried. The visitors were first out of the blocks and put Cwmaman under pressure, but they defended well against a much bigger team. With so much at steak for both teams chances were few and far between,

Llansawel went into the lead after 30 minutes with a move down the right, the cross was turned in by the number 8 at the near post.

Cwmaman hit the bar from a shot by David Airey, but half time came with the home team trailing by 1 goal to nil.

10 minutes into second half the score was 0-2 after a defensive mix up in the Cwmaman defence. This spurred the home team into action and following a corner Scott Carson stabbed the ball home from 6 yards.

Cwmaman were now completely on top, they pounded the away team and forced several corners but could not get the all important second goal. In the 75th minute a flowing move involving David Airey and Robert Evans resulted in the latter scoring with a magnificent volley into the roof of the net.

This point may prove vital at the end of the season. Manager Leighton Price was very pleased with the performance with new signings Robert Evans and Adrian James showing up very well.

Porthcawl Town 2 Cwmaman Institute 1

24th January 2009 (Welsh League)

A trip to the seaside for Cwmaman against one of the promotion contenders resulted in another narrow defeat. Cwmaman’s performance was far reaching from their defeat at Monmouth, they dominated the opening 30 minutes without getting the reward they deserved. New signing Robert Evans was prominent as was young Leigh Davies in the centre of midfield; the return from injury of Rhys Howe was welcomed by Manager Leighton Price.

Cwmaman fell behind after 30 minutes, when Porthcawl broke out of defence, and the striker scored beating Martyn Phillips at the near post. Within 5 minutes the home team were awarded a penalty but Martyn Phillips dived to his right and made an outstanding save.

Once again the second half was very much like the first, Cwmaman were on top in the opening period but it was the home team that increased their lead. They were awarded a second penalty and the number 10 made no mistake from the spot. Back came Cwmaman and Taffo Davies pulled a goal back when he headed home from a free kick.

If Cwmaman can produce this performance against one of the best teams in the division, they should start winning games and climbing the league table.

Monmouth Town 5 Cwmaman Institute 0

27th December 2008 (Welsh League)

Another long journey ended in Cwmaman’s heaviest defeat of the season, the game was lost in the first 25 mins when the visitors found themselves 3 goals down. That remained the score until half time and hopefully give Cwmaman time to regroup, but worse was to follow, within 5 mins of the restart the score was 4 nil, when the Monmouth forward had a free header at the far post. The young Cwmaman team tried to rally but on a heavy pitch it was a hard struggle.

Two further goals followed before the end of a game Cwmaman found very difficult to come to terms with. This was by far the worst performance of the season, but with some experienced players joining in the new year hopefully results will start to improve.

Newport Civil Service 3 Cwmaman Institute 2

20th December 2008 (Welsh League)

Cwmaman first visit the Civil Service ground ended in a disappointing defeat. The game started with Cwmaman fielding eight youth team players due to injuries and suspension.

The home team were the quickest out of the blocks and put Cwm under pressure, with 10 mins gone Newport went in front from a disputed corner, Cwm failed to clear the ball and the home striker scored from close range. From that moment on Cwmaman controlled the game and restricted Civil Service to breakaways. Richard Williams hit the post from 25 yards with the keeper beaten and they went close when a cross by Anthony Hatch went across goal without being turned in. Cwmaman drew level on the stroke of half time, a move down the right involving Mike Oliver and Scott Woodford resulted in a cross to the near post for young Daniel Johnson to score with a great header.

The second half was much the same with Cwmaman in the driving seat, they were looking dangerous on the attack, and they went close with two headers by Richard Williams. At the other end Kurt Rogers made a great save diving to his right, then a mistake resulted in the home team going back in front. Back came Cwm and after Civil Service had missed a penalty, good work between Johnson and Williams put Cwm back on level terms when Williams scored on 90 mins, but the game wasn’t over and with time running out the home team scored the winning goal to deny Cwm the result they so richly deserved.

Cwmamman United 2 Cwmaman Institute 1

6th December 2008 (Welsh League)

On a very poor playing surface good football was difficult, but the young Institute team adapted well to the conditions and had the better of the early exchanges. Chris Banfield and Richard Williams were getting into good positions and causing the home defence problems. On 25mins Cwmaman were awarded a penalty, after Richard Williams was pushed in the box, but the home keeper saved well from Leighton Price.

Within 2mins the home team went into the lead after a defensive mistake. Some of the decisions by the referee were very baffling.

A move down the left resulted in Banfield putting Cwm back on level terms with a powerful header. The home team hit the woodwork before the half time whistle came.

Cwmaman had chances with Banfield and Williams missing one on one chances. On sixty minutes Banfield was taken from the field after breaking his leg after a tackle by the home keeper. Chances were created at both ends but it was the home team that took all three points with a goal 5mins from time. The Cwmaman team gave their all and deserved to take something from the game, but some of the refereeing decisions had everyone guessing.

Cwmaman Institute 1 Porthcawl 1 aet

Porthcawl won 4 - 2 on penalties

15th November 2008 (Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup)

Another top four team was taken all the way by the young Cwmaman team. It was nip and tuck all the way in this league cup game, Cwmaman started with Scott Carson in at centre back and David Airey back from suspension was in the starting eleven.

The away side were the first to create any opening but Martyn Phillips was on hand to stop the attack. Porthcawl were using their bigger physicality to their advantage, but the young Cwmaman team were more than a match and Ross Williams and David Airey were causing problems in attack for the home team. The first half ended with the score at 0-0.

Cwmaman were more of an attacking force in the second half, but it was the away team that took the lead from a corner. The corner was sent over and Steven Atkinson had a free header at the far post to put the visitors in front.

Back came Cwmaman and Daniel Johnson was on hand to level the match after being put through by Mike Oliver. Extra time was played with no further scoring.

The tie was won by Porthcawl 4-2 on penalties and will play Pentwyn in the next round.

Cwmaman Institute 0 Llantwit Fardre 1

1st November 2008 (Welsh League)

Once again a single score denied Cwmaman a share of the spoils. Manager Leighton Price made several changes, with Taffo Davies and Scott Carson coming back into the team and Ross Williams starting as the lone striker.

Fardre who stated the game in 3rd place in the league, were looking to build on their good start to the season. The first 20 mins were very even with neither side able to break down the defences. The away team got the break on 30mins when they were awarded a penalty which was duly converted by Ryan Prosser. Back came Cwmaman and Ross Williams hit the bar with a powerful header, Price was denied at the far post by the Fardre keeper. The half time whistle came with the penalty kick separating the two teams.

During the second half the away team Management were getting very agitated at their lack of chances coming their way, this was down to the work ethic of the Cwmaman team. As the game wore on Ross Williams had a chance saved and Martyn Phillips made two very good saves to deny the Fardre attack. Once again a very good performance From Cwmaman who are home to Porthcawl in the Nathaniel Cup next week kick off 1.30 pm.

Aberbargoed Buds 2 Cwmaman Institute 2

25th October 2008 (Welsh League)

Cwmaman made the short journey to Aberbargoed having already won there in the Welsh cup this season. The home team were first out of the blocks, but the young Cwm team were more than a match and defended well during the opening exchanges. Manager Leighton Price fielded 7 players under 19 in the starting line up, the young players showed a lot of grit and determination. Richard Williams was prominent in central midfield and Daniel Johnson was causing problems down the wing.

A free kick out wide was not cleared by the Cwm defence and the home team opened the scoring, the lead did not last long as Dan Johnson made a run down the left and crossed for Williams to score at the far post.

Cwm were now on top when they were awarded a penalty but the home keeper saved the shot and the teams went in at half time on level terms.

Chances were missed by both teams during the second half, but on 60 mins Aberbargoed went back in front with almost an identical goal as their first, a free kick not cleared and the ball ended up in the back of the net. Not to be out done back came Cwmaman, with Price and Oliver making the home keeper work hard to keep his side in front. Jack Howe was becoming more prominent down the left, a shot went just over, then on 88 mins Ross Williams earned Cwmaman a well deserved point converting a pass from Howe.

This was a point gained but with more experience these young players are going to win more matches than they lose.

Cwmaman Institute 2 AFC Llwydcoed 3

18th October 2008 (Welsh League)

A large crowd gathered at Canolfan for this local derby between these two local rivals. It was Cwmaman that started the game on the front foot, and pushed Llwydcoed back on the defensive, the home team went into the lead following a corner that caused havoc in the Coed defence, that allowed Matthew Cable to score from close range. Cwmaman continued to press home their advantage and should have added to their goal tally but for some good defence by Coed.

The away team weathered the storm and took the game to Cwmaman, they scored the equalizer on 25 mins, a quick free kick caught the home team napping and from the cross the goal was headed home from close range. Cwmaman went back into the lead after a big mistake by the Coed goalkeeper, he was in control of the football but pressure from Mike Oliver made him lose that control and Oliver scored from a very narrow angle. It remained 2-1 at half time.

Coed started the second half on a positive note, Cwmaman were forced to defend for long periods, but they still caused Coed problems on the break. The equalising goal for Coed was very controversial, from a corner, Phillips in the Cwm goal was impeded by a Coed player, the Ref let play go on and the ball was stabbed home from close range. This was the turning point in the game, with Coed having their tails up and going for the winning goal. A free kick taken by young Jack Howe was headed back across goal and Cables header went the wrong side of the post. A cross into the Cwm penalty area was only half cleared and Ryan Barry scored from 18 yards to win the game for Coed.

The Young Cwmaman team can take a lot of heart from this game, their commitment was first class and they were never overawed by their more experienced opponents. In Jack Howe, Scott Woodford, Richard Williams, Leigh Davies and Daniel Johnson they have players for the future.

Pontyclun 1 Cwmaman Institute 2

                                                                                            4th October 2008 (Welsh League)

Cwm started game well with several good chances falling to Chris Banfield and Ross Williams. The first half ended goalless.

Pontyclun started second half with a goal after 5 minutes. This shook Cwm up. Jack Howe continued to impress everyone with his good work rate. Chris Banfield supporting him well. The pair of them getting plenty of balls up front. To Leighton Price, who got a well deserved equalizer. and then late in the game, sealed the points for Cwm with his second goal.

Llansawel 0 Cwmaman Institute 0

27th September 2008 (Welsh League)

The opening exchanges were very even without either side creating any clear cut chances. Cwmaman were looking to play the ball on the ground, where the home team were more direct, using their big strikers’ as targets.

The first half went by with neither team dominating the game, Cwmaman’s best period was in the final 10 minutes of the half, when Jack Howe had a shot well saved and they had two clear cut penalty claims turned down.

The home team were more positive in the second half, and started to put more pressure on the Cwmaman defence, but the young Cwm team withstood the onslaught and came away with a point. Not a pretty game but all down to experience for the youngsters of Cwmaman

Merthyr Saints 1 Cwmaman Institute 4

20th September 2008 (Nathanial Cup Round 1)

Cwmaman controlled this cup game throughout, but suffered a shock when they fell behind after 20 minutes. A corner was flicked on at the near post and the referee ruled that the ball had crossed the line before it was hacked clear.

Cwmaman roared back and soon equalised when Chris Banfield smashed the ball home, and the same player was soon involved in the visitors taking the lead, beating a couple of defenders before crossing for David Airey to nod in.

Cwmaman continued to dominate and could have had two or three more before half time, but some mystifying decisions by the officials denied them.

Cwmaman started sluggishly after the break, without ever looking in any danger. They soon recovered from their slow start and normal service was resumed.

It looked as if the 3rd goal would never come with Saints keeper excelling himself in the home goal, and Leighton Price’s effort came back off the crossbar.

Substitute Lee Davies put a more realistic look to the score with a superb chip as the game entered injury time, before Michael Oliver sealed the win with a fourth via a deflection.

Insult was added to Saints’ injury when their centre half was shown red for a second booking, but it hardly mattered because the game was well and truly over by then.

Newport YMCA 3 Cwmaman Institute 2

13th September 2008 (Welsh Cup Round 1)

What a performance from the youngsters of Cwmaman, they matched their illustrious opponents, who were semi finalists in last seasons competition, for long periods. With six players from their under 19 team in their line up, Cwmaman started brightly, but found themselves a goal behind after 5 mins. A second goal followed on 20 mins, but by half time David Airey had pulled a goal back for Cwmaman and Leighton Price went close just before the interval.

Within 2 mins of the restart Cwmaman were on level terms, Leighton Price was pulled down in the penalty box and duly converted the spot kick. Cwmaman were now on top and both Airey and Price went close to giving Cwmaman the lead. The home team went back in front against the run of play after a defensive error allowed the striker to score at the near post. During the last 25 mins Cwmaman had several chances to progress to the next round, but it was not to be. They can be very proud of their performance and in Jack Howe they had the man of the match.

Cwmaman Institute 1 Seven Sisters 0

27th August 2008 (Welsh League)

Cwm were forced to again make changes due to the injuries and players being unavailable which enabled Ross Williams to make his Welsh League debut . Again Cwm were forced into playing a new back four with Michael Oliver making his first appearance of the season at centre half. It was also pleasing to see Leighton starting in midfield.

The game started with Craig Lewis (Modgy) captaining the side and saw Seven Sisters gaining the territorial advantage but without creating a great deal. Indeed the game as a spectacle was of poor quality. However the game sprang to light when Ross Williams seized on a half chance and scored on his debut. HT 1-0

The second half saw Cwm creating more chances and Ross could have scored a further few goals. Then again Cwm suffered with a further two injuries to players Lewis Jones and Chris Pedrick. This gave Leighton the opportunity to give young Jack Howe his debut and he can be pleased with his performance.

The game ended with Leighton gaining a penalty and Modgy duly converting only for the eagle eyed referee to order a retake due to players encroaching. The keeper duly saved the resulting penalty.

Cwmaman Institute 1 Briton Ferry 3

23rd August 2008 (Welsh League)

After their very good mid week performance against a good AFC Porth team, Cwmaman were in confident mood going into this game. They were soon brought down to earth in this first home game of the new season. With 10 mins gone they were 2 nil down after two defensive errors, they were under the cosh for most of the first half against a good Briton Ferry side. They had few chances in this period, only a Shaun Chappell effort which went wide of the goal post. If things could get worse for Cwmaman they did, with a minute before half time the visitors scored a third goal, when they were caught square at the back and the Ferry number 9 scored their third.

The second half was better but still not to the standard required by Manager Leighton Price. They had more of the ball and played better football, but chances were few, they did manage a goal when a Ferry defender turned the ball into his own net. Cwmaman were reduced to 10 men for the last 30 minutes when young Scott Woodford was injured and all Cwmaman subs had been used. They battled a lot better in the second half and patience will be the name of the game over the next few weeks as the manager Leighton Price gets the side back on track.

Aberbargoed Buds 3 Cwmaman Institute 4

16th August 2008 (FAW Welsh Cup Preliminary Round)

Cwmaman travelled to Aberbargoed for this Welsh cup tie in optimistic mood, with several players making their debut and fielding a young team.

The home team started the brighter putting Cwmaman under pressure and creating several chances. Gradually Cwmaman got a foot hold in the game and started creating chances without converting them. Aberbargoed opened the scoring in the 28th min with a move down the left, the ball was squared across the goal and the chance taken.

The weather and playing conditions were getting worse but half time came with Cwmaman only 1-0 down.

The young Cwmaman team were much more positive in the second half and Chris Banfield equalised after good work by David Airey. The home team then had a player dismissed for swearing. The game changed in favour of the home team when they scored from a free kick from all of 30yards. Matthew Cable equalised from the penalty spot for Cwmaman after Craig (Modgy) Lewis was pulled down. Then Aberbargoed had a second player dismissed again for swearing.

Cwmaman took control of the game with Chris Pedrick giving them the lead with a shot from 20yards. The home team were on the rack and young Richard Williams scored with powerful header after a good run by Lewis Jones. Cwmaman travel to Newport YMCA in the next round and are at home in the league next Saturday 23rd Aug kick off 2.30 against Briton Ferry.

     Youth Match Reports

Cwmaman Institute FC 3 Merthyr Tydfil 3

26th April 2009 (League - Central)

Cwm went in to the game high in confidence after some good performances, and for the third time this season faced Merthyr Tydfil  having lost the previous two games at Penydarren Park earlier in the season, Cwm were looking  for a win and to keep their unbeaten run going. It was also good to have Scott Bobby Moore Woodford back after injury.

First Half

Cwm started the game very well not allowing Merthyr any time on the ball whilst also playing some excellent football whilst in possession. Cwm took a deserved lead after 10 min when Scott Cryer from right back played the ball down the line for Kristian Boyce who like a Bugatti Veyron outpaced the full back as he drove into the box to pull it back for Connor Wickham who made a great supporting run to tap into an empty net. Cwm almost doubled their lead when a diagonal ball from Hatchy coming forward from left back like the white Patrice Evra was fumbled by the GK under pressure from John but his shot just went the wrong side of the post. The front three of Wickham, Boyce, and John were combining well and their movement was causing the Merthyr defence problems. Although Merthyr had a fair share of possession they weren’t penetrating the home sides defence with Kurt Rogers in goal having very little to do there biggest threat coming from set pieces. On 32 minutes Cwm conceded a poor goal defensively from there point of view as they were slow to react to a short corner which was crossed to the far post for a free header back across for the number 8 to tap in and equalize.  Cwm’s response was good as they re took the lead within 8 minutes as Connor Wickham was upended in the box the referee awarded a penalty which was emphatically converted by Corey Gattuso  Hollidge. It looked as if Cwm would go in deservedly at the break 2-1 in front however another corner on the stroke of half time wasn’t dealt with and Merthyr equalized again. HT 2-2.

Second Half

The second half followed the same pattern as the first with both teams trying to play football which made for an entertaining game. Again it was the home side who created all the chances and just past the hour mark regained the lead this time a long kick by Kurt  was ceased upon by Boyce who beat the keeper in a race to the ball clipped it pass him it was heading to the net but gain the awareness of Connor Wickham to get up and support made sure it went in to score his 2nd and  restore Cwm’s lead for the third time. Cwm had 3 or 4 great opportunities to kill the game off on the break. First Sean Woodford blasted over when he should have at least worked the keeper. Then a great driven cross from Hathciano was met sweet as a nut by Darren John at the far post however the keeper produced a fine save to keep his team in it. Then a 3 on 1 situation was wasted when Boyce failed to release the ball earlier to Connor Wickham who made another great run but passed to John instead who was given offside.  With time running out it looked as if Cwm were heading for a deserved win against the best footballing side we’ve played this season. However in the 3rd   minute  Of injury time Merthyr scored a wonder goal from 30 yards to equalize , sadly for the home side football showed what a cruel game it can be. On a positive note six games unbeaten, 2 games to go and if we stick together there’s no reason why we can’t challenge for honours next year.

Cwm went into the game looking to avenge an unfortunate 2-1 defeat earlier in the season against a Porth side  only needing a point to secure the title in their first season in the welsh youth league.

First Half

The game started at a frenetic pace with Cwm looking to get their passing game going with porth showing one of the reason why there top of the league working hard closing the home side down. Cwm had the most possession and just edged the territorial advantage with the front three combining well causing the visitors problems without really testing the keeper. Porth looked dangerous on the break but their main threat Adam Wright was well marshalled by Kyle Lowther in Defence. In an evenly contested first half with very few chances between 2 evenly matched teams no surprise the first half finished goalless.

Second  Half

The second half followed the same pattern as the first however the game was starting to open up with both teams looking for the quick counter. Cwm senced the away side getting nervous as a point would be good enough for them and started pinning Porth back with a long range effort from cookie just dipping over and they forced a succession of corners again without overly testing  the keeper, but started to get their full backs forward more with  the make shift RB Darren Cafu John overlapping well. As time ticked away Porth run the clock down as the game finished goalless. Our Congratulations go to Porth the best side always wins the league as the table doesn’t lie and with one game to go look as of they might go unbeaten. For Cwm we are improving all the time and showed we can compete with the best teams in this league.

Three in a Row and on a Roll

First half

It was the away side who started quickly almost taking a shock lead after only 30 seconds thankfully Rodders in goal was alert to tip the shot round the post. The first 10 minutes Pontyclun put Cwm under pressure without creating any clear cut chances but forced a succession of corners. Then Cwm got their passing game going with the midfield duo of Woodford and Davies taking control as Cwm proceeded to dominate the half. Cwm’s first chance fell to Boyce after a flowing move ending with his volley just going over the bar. Another chance came when Darren Ronaldo John jinked past a few players before his shot was saved. Then after another great move Hatchy produced a pinpoint cross to the back post where John steamed in with a bullet like header which was saved point blank by the keeper. Then Boyce nipped the ball from the defenders toes after a poor touch from the defender but dragged his shot wide. It was a joy to watch the only thing missing from Cwm’s play was a goal. Just as the first half seemed destined to end goalless, following a bit of pinball inside the Pontyclun penalty area Roberto Hathciano reacted quickest to break the deadlock and put Cwm into a deserved half time lead.

Second Half

The second half followed the same pattern as the first with the away side starting the better having good spells of possession without really piercing Cwm’s back line which was again well marshalled by Scott Bobby Moore Woodford. Then the introduction of Cookie, Ross and Corey had an effect. Cookie was different class, and it was good to see Corey showing an appetite to play again as he looked lively when coming on. Cwm thought they’d’ scored a second with Johnson but the Hawkeye linemen spotted an off the ball incident 2 minutes earlier and so consulted the referee and the goal was disallowed.  Cwm needed a second goal to kill the game off as Pontyclun were always a threat with Marcus James being their best player. With 12 minutes to go Cwm finally made the game safe when Cookie skipped past the defender on the right and got to the byline to pull it back for Ross Solsjkaer to tap in to an empty net. Overall a good performance and again it was hard to choose a man of the match with the midfield duo of Woodford and Davies working tirelessly, Darren John also impressive and a mention to Scott Cryer who was like a young Garry Neville. Well done lads lets keep it going and have a good end to the season, big one next a derby at home to Llwydcoed.

Cwm make it 2 wins in 2

Cwm travelled to Cambrian looking to avenge their 2-0 home defeat earlier in the season.

First half

It was the home side who started the brighter keeping possession well putting cwm under pressure. The home side only had chances through cwm’s mistakes; Rodders obviously fancied some shooting practice when he passed the ball straight to the Cam Striker however he redeemed himself with cat like reactions to fingertip the ball round the post. He also made 2 0r 3 smart saves in the first 15 minutes to keep it 0-0. Cwm slowly got into the game and broke the deadlock after 25min with an incisive break way on the counter, Hatch’s ball up to Johnson who flicked the ball into path of Boyce to curl into the bottom corner past the bewildered keeper to score his second in two games and put Cwm 1 up. Cwm grew in confidence and should have doubled their lead on two occasions firstly Hatch blasted over when Johnson was better placed centrally. Then a fumble by the keeper fell to John on the edge of the box but his goal bound effort was blocked. HT 1-0 to Cwm.

Second Half

Cwm controlled the second half and only rare moments from set pieces did Cambrian threaten as Cwm looked the more likely team to score on the break with the pace of  Usain Boyce up front. Cam changed their formation and brought on the big centre forward however he was no match for Scott Woodford as he one when every header. The home side seemed to run out of ideas against a well organised and disciplined Cwm side. Substitute Corey Gattuso Hollidge nearly put the result beyond doubt with a Wayne Rooney like volley which the keeper flapped at like a seal but just kept it out. Cwm comfortably saw out the last few minutes to make it two wins in 2 and gain revenge for their home defeat to Cambrian and a result which all but ends their title hopes. It would be hard to pick a man of the match for Cwm as 1 to 11 were superb, if only we’d played like we have in the last two games previously then would have surely been in with a shout but it wasn’t to be. However it’s good to see everyone enjoying it and working hard with each other and improving with each game well done lads keep it going.

Cwmaman Institute FC 2 Bryntirion 1

22nd March 2009 (League - Central)

Cwm showed good bouncebackability after a poor performance the previous week against Bettws,  to produce one of their best performances of the season against a good Bryntirion side.

 First half

Cwm showed their intent from the start playing some excellent football and got off to the perfect start within 5 min when Kristian Boyce latched on to a great ball by Anthony Hatch to out run the Bryntirion defence and lobb the ball exquisitely over the advancing keeper to put the home side 1 up. Cwm continued to unsettle the visitors and didn’t have to wait long for a second goal when a great team move resulted in Trampelli overlapping from right back to produce a pinpoint cross for Johnson to head home to put Cwm 2 -0 up and in control. Bryntirion came back into it as the half wore on but the home defence restricted them to long range efforts which Rodders dealt with well. HT 2-0.

 Second half

Bryntirion started the second half strongly and within 5 min pulled a goal back when for the first time they got behind the Cwm defence the striker beat Rodders to the ball as the ball spun in to the net. Cwm however reacted positively and should have made the game safe when a long Kick by Rodders found its way to Boyce who tried heading it over the keeper but dint get enough power on it. Bryntirion pushed for an equaliser but Cwms defence was resolute especially the centre half pairing of Howe and Lowther who were outstanding and they were well protected by man of the match Sean Woodford  who was like a Duracell bunny as he didn’t stop running, and Leigh Davies. Both teams had a players dismissed towards the end in what was by no means a dirty game, Cwm survived  a nervy 8 minutes of added time to claim a morale boosting and much deserved 3 points. This was the best team performance of the season and for once got a bit of luck. Next game away to Cambrian

Bettws 3 Cwmaman Institute FC 1

15th March 2009 (League - Central)

Cwm’s worst performance of the season hands Bettws first win

 First half

Cwm started the game brightly and for the first 5-10 minutes played some good football keeping the play on the floor on what was a dreadful  playing surface, and took the lead after a shot by young Connor Wickham was turned into his own net by the Bettws defender after 3minutes. Bettws equalised shortly after and that’s how the first half finished. HT 1-1.

 Second Half

The second half somehow managed to get worse and in the first 15 minutes of the half found themselves 3-1 down and if it wasn’t for the efforts of Rodders in Goal could have been worse. Cwm huffed and puffed after that and created a few chances  in an attempt to get back into it but the keeper wasn’t to be denied. Make no mistake Bettws were well worth the win. The only positive was the performance of Connor Wickham. We must forget this game and move on with next game at home to Bryntirion.

Overall an embarrassing performance.

DERBY DAY ENDS IN A DRAW

Cwmaman made the short trip to local rivals Llwydcoed for the second time this season after a goalless draw in the cup.

First half

Cwmaman started the game a with a real intent and purpose to their play, looking for an early goal. They created the first chance when Darren John crossed for Kristian Boyce whose volley was saved brilliantly by the keeper. The away side dominated the first 20 minutes and took the lead on 15 when Daniel Johnson hit a speculative 30 yard shot which the keeper failed to deal with. They should have doubled their lead when a cross field ball by hatch found its way to John at the back post who blasted wide. Kristian Boyce did well to get to the by line and cut the ball back but no one busted the gut to get on the end of it. These missed opportunities were to prove costly. Coed finally got a foot hold in the game and forced a corner which was headed over at near post. Then the game became scrappy which suited the home side and with virtually the last kick of the first half  Coed equalised with a well taken goal, a good ball played through for the striker who lobbed the ball over Kurt to make the  Ht score 1-1.

Second half

The second half started much more evenly as the home side were clearly lifted by the goal. 15 min in to the second half Coed  won a penalty after a clear foul by Scott Woodford it was converted to give Coed a shock 2-1 lead. It was a test of character how Cwm would react and they reacted immediately within 2 minutes a good ball played down the line by Hatch for Boyce who lobbed over the on rushing keeper for Darren John to head in and bring the scores level at 2-2. Cwm regained the ascendancy and looked as if they would snatch a winner and they had a glorious chance when John was clean through with only the keeper to beat  his shot flew over the bar Ole Gunnar John , on this occasion more like Olivia Newton John . For all their dominance they only managed to test the keeper once who produced a superb one handed save from a Hatch free kick. The tempo of the game then dropped after Cwm failed to make their territorial advantage count, chances were few and far between although Coed came the closest to a decisive fifth goal when the striker was clean through lobbed Kurt but Kyle headed off the line after that the game petered out with the home side happier with a point at full time.

We must stick together and continue to work hard and the positives are we didn’t loose and were creating chances and its only a matter of time before they go in and results will improve so heads up lads, Next game Porth at home

22nd February 2009 (League - Central)

Cwm travelled to unbeaten Porth after a much needed win against Pontyclun.

Cwm started the game positively dominating possession and they had the best chance of the first half when a good break down the right by John who passed to Boyce who got to the by line to pull it back to Johnson but his effort was cleared off the line. Cwm thought they should have had a clear penalty when Johnson Burst into the area and was fouled but to everyone’s surprise the linesman gave offside. The half time score 0-0.

In the second half Porth slowly started to get into the game but the deadlock was broken by a penalty decision given for a push on the Cwmaman forward that surprised everyone in the ground, but this made up for the one they should have had in the first half. Porth keeper was sent the wrong way from the spot kick by Hollidge putting the visitors 1-0 up. At this point I looked as if Cwm would go on to win the game. To their credit Porth started to push forward looking for an equalizer and didn’t have to wait long when a ball into the box was helped on by and there was the Porth forward Adam wright to finish with a neat volley into the bottom corner.

With the game seemingly heading for a draw Porth snatched all three points with 3 minutes to go when a corner somehow found its way in. This Was a game Cwm certainly didn’t deserved to loose and on the balance of play I think a draw would have been affair result as Cwm dominated the first half with Porth coming on strong in the second. Once again a good performance against a good side but nothing to show for it. FT score 2-1

CWM UP AND RUNNING

Cwmaman travelled to Pontyclun looking to build on a good performance against Cambrian and a win to kick start their season.

First half

Cwm started brightly pressurising the home side and created the first chance when a ball over the top for Krystian Boyce to run onto and shoot but the keeper was quick off his line to block. On a heavy pitch the away side retained possession well and it seemed only a matter of time a goal would come as Williams , Hollidge and  Johnson all had attempts at goal. Cwm deservedly took the lead after a good move down the right started by Trampinelli he continued his run from right back to deliver a Beckham like cross for Williams who rose like a majestic salmon to make it 1-0. Rodders in goal was merely a spectator in the first half as the away side dominated but only had the 1 goal to show for their efforts at HT.

Second Half

The second half followed the same pattern with Leigh Davies and Hollidge dictating play in midfield, as Cwm looked for a second to kill the game off. Midway through the second half they finally got the second goal all be it with an element of luck as Johnson burst into the penalty his shot taking a deflection off the defender looping the ball over the stranded keeper, no one could deny Johnson this goal  which he deserved for his work rate.  He could and should have added to his tally. To their credit the home side kept going and rallied late on forcing Rodders in goal who was faultless into two impressive saves to preserve the clean sheet. The Final score 2-0. A clean sheet and more importantly three points, we must build on this with the next game way to unbeaten Porth.

A mention must also go to Darren John a contender for man of the match who arguably had his best game for Cwm who would have topped his performance with a goal but for brilliant save from the keeper. Leigh Davies who was carrying an injury battled on for the cause. However man of the match goes to Kyle Lowther who was back to his best and was alert on each occasion to avert the danger and made a crucial goal saving tackle at 1-0. Another plus note was the return of Ross Smith who  worked hard when coming on midway through the second half and could have scored but for some bizarre off side decisions. When back to full fitness

Ross will no doubt be a tremendous asset to the squad.

DAYLIGHT ROBBERY!

Haven’t not played a game in weeks Cwm returned to action against high flying Cambrian. The home side started the game really well. With the midfield trio of Richard Williams, Corey Hollidge and Leigh Davies winning the battle and unsettling the away side. Daniel Johnson ran his legs off up front whilst repeated fouling on him went unpunished by the ref as did all tackles how their number 7 escaped a booking at least was beyond belief.  Cwm looked the more likely team to score although Cambrian did force Kurt into a couple of decent saves. Cwm had the best chance when good interplay between Williams and Johnson resulted in Johnson dragging his shot wide. Cambrians keeper looked nervy as he fumbled a shot from Williams which Johnson nearly pounced on. Then with 8 minutes remaining of the first half it was the away side that broke the deadlock when Cwm tried playing out from the back were dispossessed on the halfway and were punished with a ball over the top which was finished well by the striker to give Kurt in goal no chance. This is how it remained at HT in an evenly contested first half.

Cwm regrouped and started the second half positively believing they could get something out of the game. The home side dominated the second half without really testing the keeper. Chances fell to Woodford , he just failed to get on the end of Hatch’s free kick with the keeper back peddling. The best chance fell to the substitute Nicky Bevan after good work by Johnson to play him in but he failed to test the keeper. Cambrian looked dangerous on the break as Cwm pressed forward but Kurt in goal was alert on each occasion. Quick thinking from Hollidge from a free kick went inches wide. Then a scramble inside the Cambrian penalty area just wouldn’t fall to a navy shirt. With time running out Cwm had a free kick in which they sent Kurt forward to pack the penalty area to try and rescue a point which they at least deserved. However Cambrian cleared to break away and score with virtually the last kick of the game to make the final score 2-0. Cambrian showed why their top of the league having been outplayed they still won the game. Cwm can be proud of the performance and commitment and if they show the same effort and commitment every week I’ m sure we will start climbing the league.

Cwmaman Institute FC 1 Briton Ferry 2

21st December 2008 (League Cup Group A)

In a winner takes all contest Cwm knew nothing short of a win would be good enough to make the quarter finals.

 First Half

Cwm started brightly constantly keeping the play on the ground with some slick passing. The midfield duo of Leigh Davies and Sean Woodford quickly established control and Cwm started to dominate the play without significantly testing the visiting keeper. However good interplay between Richard Williams and Daniel Johnson resulted in Johnson dragging his shot wide. Williams himself had a couple of efforts. Also the wide players and full backs were combining well with Darren john and Howe down the left and Hatchy and Trampy down the right. Britton Ferry rarely threatened but occasionally broke well with pace however only one long range shot they could manage which was tipped round the post by Rogers in goal. On the stroke of half time Cwm took the lead after a good passing move ending with a fortunate deflection taking it into the path of Hatch who one on one with the keeper made no mistake to give Cwm a deserved lead at HT.

Second Half

The second half followed the same patterns as the first with Cwm controlling the game. Undoubtedly the turning point came when Johnson had the chance to make the game safe when put through did the hard part by heading it over the keeper took a touch but then someh
