Match Reports
Cwmaman Institute 1 Porthcawl 1 aet
Porthcawl won 4 – 2 on penalties
15th November 20014 (Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup)
Another top four team was taken all the way by the young Cwmaman team. It was nip and tuck all the way in this league cup game, Cwmaman started with Scott Carson in at centre back and David Airey back from suspension was in the starting eleven.
The away side were the first to create any opening but Martyn Phillips was on hand to stop the attack. Porthcawl were using their bigger physicality to their advantage, but the young Cwmaman team were more than a match and Ross Williams and David Airey were causing problems in attack for the home team. The first half ended with the score at 0-0.
Cwmaman were more of an attacking force in the second half, but it was the away team that took the lead from a corner. The corner was sent over and Steven Atkinson had a free header at the far post to put the visitors in front.
Back came Cwmaman and Daniel Johnson was on hand to level the match after being put through by Mike Oliver. Extra time was played with no further scoring.
The tie was won by Porthcawl 4-2 on penalties and will play Pentwyn in the next round.
Cwmaman Institute 0 Llantwit Fardre 1
1st November 2014 (Welsh League)
Once again a single score denied Cwmaman a share of the spoils. Manager Leighton Price made several changes, with Taffo Davies and Scott Carson coming back into the team and Ross Williams starting as the lone striker.
Fardre who stated the game in 3rd place in the league, were looking to build on their good start to the season. The first 20 mins were very even with neither side able to break down the defences. The away team got the break on 30mins when they were awarded a penalty which was duly converted by Ryan Prosser. Back came Cwmaman and Ross Williams hit the bar with a powerful header, Price was denied at the far post by the Fardre keeper. The half time whistle came with the penalty kick separating the two teams.
During the second half the away team Management were getting very agitated at their lack of chances coming their way, this was down to the work ethic of the Cwmaman team. As the game wore on Ross Williams had a chance saved and Martyn Phillips made two very good saves to deny the Fardre attack. Once again a very good performance From Cwmaman who are home to Porthcawl in the Nathaniel Cup next week kick off 1.30 pm.
Aberbargoed Buds 2 Cwmaman Institute 2
25th October 2014 (Welsh League)
Cwmaman made the short journey to Aberbargoed having already won there in the Welsh cup this season. The home team were first out of the blocks, but the young Cwm team were more than a match and defended well during the opening exchanges. Manager Leighton Price fielded 7 players under 19 in the starting line up, the young players showed a lot of grit and determination. Richard Williams was prominent in central midfield and Daniel Johnson was causing problems down the wing.
A free kick out wide was not cleared by the Cwm defence and the home team opened the scoring, the lead did not last long as Dan Johnson made a run down the left and crossed for Williams to score at the far post.
Cwm were now on top when they were awarded a penalty but the home keeper saved the shot and the teams went in at half time on level terms.
Chances were missed by both teams during the second half, but on 60 mins Aberbargoed went back in front with almost an identical goal as their first, a free kick not cleared and the ball ended up in the back of the net. Not to be out done back came Cwmaman, with Price and Oliver making the home keeper work hard to keep his side in front. Jack Howe was becoming more prominent down the left, a shot went just over, then on 88 mins Ross Williams earned Cwmaman a well deserved point converting a pass from Howe.
This was a point gained but with more experience these young players are going to win more matches than they lose.
Cwmaman Institute 2 AFC Llwydcoed 3
18th October 2014 (Welsh League)
A large crowd gathered at Canolfan for this local derby between these two local rivals. It was Cwmaman that started the game on the front foot, and pushed Llwydcoed back on the defensive, the home team went into the lead following a corner that caused havoc in the Coed defence, that allowed Matthew Cable to score from close range. Cwmaman continued to press home their advantage and should have added to their goal tally but for some good defence by Coed.
The away team weathered the storm and took the game to Cwmaman, they scored the equalizer on 25 mins, a quick free kick caught the home team napping and from the cross the goal was headed home from close range. Cwmaman went back into the lead after a big mistake by the Coed goalkeeper, he was in control of the football but pressure from Mike Oliver made him lose that control and Oliver scored from a very narrow angle. It remained 2-1 at half time.
Coed started the second half on a positive note, Cwmaman were forced to defend for long periods, but they still caused Coed problems on the break. The equalising goal for Coed was very controversial, from a corner, Phillips in the Cwm goal was impeded by a Coed player, the Ref let play go on and the ball was stabbed home from close range. This was the turning point in the game, with Coed having their tails up and going for the winning goal. A free kick taken by young Jack Howe was headed back across goal and Cables header went the wrong side of the post. A cross into the Cwm penalty area was only half cleared and Ryan Barry scored from 18 yards to win the game for Coed.
The Young Cwmaman team can take a lot of heart from this game, their commitment was first class and they were never overawed by their more experienced opponents. In Jack Howe, Scott Woodford, Richard Williams, Leigh Davies and Daniel Johnson they have players for the future.
Pontyclun 1 Cwmaman Institute 2
4th October 2014(Welsh League)
Cwm started game well with several good chances falling to Chris Banfield and Ross Williams. The first half ended goalless.
Pontyclun started second half with a goal after 5 minutes. This shook Cwm up. Jack Howe continued to impress everyone with his good work rate. Chris Banfield supporting him well. The pair of them getting plenty of balls up front. To Leighton Price, who got a well deserved equalizer. and then late in the game, sealed the points for Cwm with his second goal.
Llansawel 0 Cwmaman Institute 0
27th September 2014 (Welsh League)
The opening exchanges were very even without either side creating any clear cut chances. Cwmaman were looking to play the ball on the ground, where the home team were more direct, using their big strikers’ as targets.
The first half went by with neither team dominating the game, Cwmaman’s best period was in the final 10 minutes of the half, when Jack Howe had a shot well saved and they had two clear cut penalty claims turned down.
The home team were more positive in the second half, and started to put more pressure on the Cwmaman defence, but the young Cwm team withstood the onslaught and came away with a point. Not a pretty game but all down to experience for the youngsters of Cwmaman
Merthyr Saints 1 Cwmaman Institute 4
20th September 2014 (Nathanial Cup Round 1)
Cwmaman controlled this cup game throughout, but suffered a shock when they fell behind after 20 minutes. A corner was flicked on at the near post and the referee ruled that the ball had crossed the line before it was hacked clear.
Cwmaman roared back and soon equalised when Chris Banfield smashed the ball home, and the same player was soon involved in the visitors taking the lead, beating a couple of defenders before crossing for David Airey to nod in.
Cwmaman continued to dominate and could have had two or three more before half time, but some mystifying decisions by the officials denied them.
Cwmaman started sluggishly after the break, without ever looking in any danger. They soon recovered from their slow start and normal service was resumed.
It looked as if the 3rd goal would never come with Saints keeper excelling himself in the home goal, and Leighton Price’s effort came back off the crossbar.
Substitute Lee Davies put a more realistic look to the score with a superb chip as the game entered injury time, before Michael Oliver sealed the win with a fourth via a deflection.
Insult was added to Saints’ injury when their centre half was shown red for a second booking, but it hardly mattered because the game was well and truly over by then.

13th September 2014 (Welsh Cup Round 1)
What a performance from the youngsters of Cwmaman, they matched their illustrious opponents, who were semi finalists in last seasons competition, for long periods. With six players from their under 19 team in their line up, Cwmaman started brightly, but found themselves a goal behind after 5 mins. A second goal followed on 20 mins, but by half time David Airey had pulled a goal back for Cwmaman and Leighton Price went close just before the interval.
Within 2 mins of the restart Cwmaman were on level terms, Leighton Price was pulled down in the penalty box and duly converted the spot kick. Cwmaman were now on top and both Airey and Price went close to giving Cwmaman the lead. The home team went back in front against the run of play after a defensive error allowed the striker to score at the near post. During the last 25 mins Cwmaman had several chances to progress to the next round, but it was not to be. They can be very proud of their performance and in Jack Howe they had the man of the match.
Team: M Phillips, J Howe, S Woodford, S Carson, G Owen, D Johnson, R Williams, L Davies, L Price, C Banfield, D Airey
Subs: L Jones, K Boggis, C Hollidge
Cwmaman Institute 1 Seven Sisters 0
27th August 2014 (Welsh League)
Cwm were forced to again make changes due to the injuries and players being unavailable which enabled Ross Williams to make his Welsh League debut . Again Cwm were forced into playing a new back four with Michael Oliver making his first appearance of the season at centre half. It was also pleasing to see Leighton starting in midfield.
The game started with Craig Lewis (Modgy) captaining the side and saw Seven Sisters gaining the territorial advantage but without creating a great deal. Indeed the game as a spectacle was of poor quality. However the game sprang to light when Ross Williams seized on a half chance and scored on his debut. HT 1-0
The second half saw Cwm creating more chances and Ross could have scored a further few goals. Then again Cwm suffered with a further two injuries to players Lewis Jones and Chris Pedrick. This gave Leighton the opportunity to give young Jack Howe his debut and he can be pleased with his performance.
The game ended with Leighton gaining a penalty and Modgy duly converting only for the eagle eyed referee to order a retake due to players encroaching. The keeper duly saved the resulting penalty.
Team: M Phillips, R Howe, G Davies, M Oliver, G Owen, L Jones, C Lewis, L Price, C Banfield, C Pedrick, Ro Williams
Subs: K Rogers, S Carson, S Chappell, J Howe, L Davies
Cwmaman Institute 1 Briton Ferry 3
23rd August 2014 (Welsh League)
After their very good mid week performance against a good AFC Porth team, Cwmaman were in confident mood going into this game. They were soon brought down to earth in this first home game of the new season. With 10 mins gone they were 2 nil down after two defensive errors, they were under the cosh for most of the first half against a good Briton Ferry side. They had few chances in this period, only a Shaun Chappell effort which went wide of the goal post. If things could get worse for Cwmaman they did, with a minute before half time the visitors scored a third goal, when they were caught square at the back and the Ferry number 9 scored their third.
The second half was better but still not to the standard required by Manager Leighton Price. They had more of the ball and played better football, but chances were few, they did manage a goal when a Ferry defender turned the ball into his own net. Cwmaman were reduced to 10 men for the last 30 minutes when young Scott Woodford was injured and all Cwmaman subs had been used. They battled a lot better in the second half and patience will be the name of the game over the next few weeks as the manager Leighton Price gets the side back on track.
Aberbargoed Buds 3 Cwmaman Institute 4
16th August 2014 (FAW Welsh Cup Preliminary Round)
Cwmaman travelled to Aberbargoed for this Welsh cup tie in optimistic mood, with several players making their debut and fielding a young team.
The home team started the brighter putting Cwmaman under pressure and creating several chances. Gradually Cwmaman got a foot hold in the game and started creating chances without converting them. Aberbargoed opened the scoring in the 28th min with a move down the left, the ball was squared across the goal and the chance taken.
The weather and playing conditions were getting worse but half time came with Cwmaman only 1-0 down.
The young Cwmaman team were much more positive in the second half and Chris Banfield equalised after good work by David Airey. The home team then had a player dismissed for swearing. The game changed in favour of the home team when they scored from a free kick from all of 30yards. Matthew Cable equalised from the penalty spot for Cwmaman after Craig (Modgy) Lewis was pulled down. Then Aberbargoed had a second player dismissed again for swearing.
Cwmaman took control of the game with Chris Pedrick giving them the lead with a shot from 20yards. The home team were on the rack and young Richard Williams scored with powerful header after a good run by Lewis Jones. Cwmaman travel to Newport YMCA in the next round and are at home in the league next Saturday 23rd Aug kick off 2.30 against Briton Ferry.
